Happy is what happens when all your dreams come true... well, isn't it?
Once upon a time, in the Land of Oz, there was a little girl who believed in fairy tales; of handsome princes and dreams coming true. Galinda would listen intently as her father read to her stories of Lurline, and smile when he compared her blue eyes and golden curls to the fairy queen. She dreamt of what it would be like to rule Oz.
She dedicated her earlier years to becoming the darling of Gillikin. She would venture into the heart of the city, holding conversations with the shop owners while browsing for the latest fashion. Everyone adored her.
She aspired to study sorcery when she enrolled at Shiz University. Unfortunately, the college was the beginning of her realization that not everything in life is perfect. Madame Morrible, the headmistress, refused to allow Galinda into her seminar, even when Galinda asked her to remember her entrance essay about magic wands.
Madame Morrible dictated that Miss Nessarose would be staying in her quarters. Miss Elphaba, her sister, would have to share the only room that had an opening; Galinda's.
Galinda was forced to live with the green girl, who had somehow managed to be accepted by Madame Morrible, who would tutor Miss Elphaba and take no other students. Dr. Dillamond, the Life Sciences professor, could not pronounce her name, and Master Boq practically stalked her.
Things started to look up for Galinda when the scandalicious Prince, Fiyero Tiggular, arrived at Shiz. She convinced Boq to ask Nessarose to the Ozdust, to divert his attention so that she could be with Fiyero. After all, they were perfect together.
It was that night that her life changed forever. Her roommate appeared at the dance, wearing the awful hat that she obviously had taken for a heartfelt gift; and she danced alone. Galinda could not stand the laughter and stares, and did not understand how Elphaba could pretend she did not care. So she danced with her, and they became friends.
Galinda dropped the first 'a' in her name, to express her outrage at what happened to Dr. Dillamond. Really, it was an attempt to impress Fiyero; one that failed, no less. She accompanied Elphaba to the Emerald City, and met the Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
It was not what she had expected. The Wizard was an old man, almost as short as Glinda. He had no powers, which was why he needed Elphaba, who would not have it. She enchanted a broom with the levitation spell from the Grimmerie, and flew away like a night angel. Glinda stayed behind, accepting the Wizard's offer.
Glinda planned an engagement party, to surprise Fiyero. The one who would receive the greatest shock that day was Glinda. Elphaba had come back, only to run off with Fiyero. In retaliation, Glinda revealed to the Wizard and Madame Morrible her best friend's weakness, never thinking they would actually kill Nessarose.
She became the ruler of Oz when the Wizard left. Ironically, she found herself in the position of Elphaba on the night she left; she had all she ever wanted, but did not want it anymore. Elphaba should be the one to rule, but she was dead. The witch hunters had killed her, and Glinda had watched helplessly.
It would seem that happy endings were only true in fiction.
